Maly is currently living in Cambodia and started up her own Instagram/YouTube to teach different parts of the Khmer language ranging from vocabulary, verbs, grammar, daily phrases, consonants, vowels, and numbers. Maly is open to one-on-one tutoring if you message her via Instagram. Check out her amazing content and learn more about her below! - Jas

1. What made you begin teaching Khmer on Instagram and YouTube?
The main reason for teaching Khmer was after I started learning Chinese. I was really interested in the Chinese language and culture that I studied it so much. Then one day, I thought about my own language and asked myself, "Did I ever take the time to love or become more interested in my language?" The answer was, "NO"!

And I thought, if I could love another language so much, I would never love my language at all. It's like when we start to love others but forget to love ourselves - how funny am I? So, that's the time when I started to love and wanted to learn more about my language and my culture. I want to help other people who wish to learn Khmer while I'm trying to learn more, too. That's why I made these accounts.

2. How do you come up with new topics to teach?
At first, I came up with new topics on my own by thinking about what words and other content would be important for people to learn. I also like to ask my followers what they want to learn and then I will do it for them!

3. What are your favorite parts of the Khmer culture and language?
For me, my favorite parts of the Khmer culture and language are the different ways that we greet and talk to people by their age or position. It's the way to show respect. I really love seeing people respect each other.

4. What tips with learning Khmer do you recommend for people like us who want to become fluent?
I think everyone has different methods in learning a language but if you want to speak Khmer fluently, I suggest you try to putting yourself in Khmer language environments, such as speaking with a Khmer native, reading Khmer books, listening to Khmer songs, and watching Khmer movies.

And most importantly, you should learn about the Khmer culture, not only Khmer. In every language, when you learn about their culture, you will find out new and interesting things which will make you want to keep learning the language.
