Marivel is one of my students' moms and it is an honor to say that she has become a great friend to me. I went to her daughter's sixth birthday and I was IN AWE of how beautifully crafted, decorated, and personalized the LOL-themed cake was.
When Mumu had his fifth birthday, I asked Marivel if she would be able to construct a cake after his favorite toy. She had never made a dog cake before but she was excited to research and try it out! Throughout the whole process, Marivel was thoughtful and communicative from making sure the ingredients were safe for dogs to sending pictures to get feedback before adding finishing touches. Mumu enjoyed it so much that he licked the cake tray clean (Don't worry - he didn't eat it all at once)! :)
What is your name and role at Lunabel Pasteries?
My name is Marivel Gonzalez. I am the owner and baker.
What made you become interested in having a home bakery business?
I've always liked to bake since I was eight. I started making regular cakes with frostings. I experimented and picked up things here and there. I have kids so I can't go to work but I used to work at a bakery and loved it. I love learning new things with cakes and doing things out of the normal and things I don't know. Baking is a hobby of mine. I really enjoy it.
What is your favorite part of owning your business so far? What are the challenges?
My favorite part is that I can work on my own schedule and that I have my kids with me and also to help me! My mom helps me a lot too.
I also like the freedom of trying new things and doing what I like. At the bakery I used to work at, I had to follow certain rules and only a certain amount of flavors. Now, I can use whatever I want!
One challenge is getting myself out there and getting people to come to me. I am a shy person so it is challenging putting myself out there.
Tell us about your products!
Specialized custom cakes.
If you have a photo of a cake that you want or an idea that you have, I try to make it happen.
When you go to a store, you usually pick from a menu of selections that they have. I don't have one - instead, bring me a picture and I will recreate it. It may not be completely the same but I will try to recreate it the best that I can.
What else would you like for people to know about you and/or your business?
What brings me joy is when people enjoy my baking. I really look forward to seeing people try what I bake and enjoy it. To me, it's not just I make the product and get money. I hope they enjoy this product and I enjoy how it tastes and you want people to enjoy how it tastes. It brings me joy that I can bring other people joy.
Marivel, thank you for taking time to talk with us about your business. We are so thankful for how much time and detail you took into making Mumu's dog birthday cake. Please support her local business if you are living in or around the Seattle area. :)
