I met Jennifer when we were still in grad school, finishing up summer quarter in our different teaching prep programs at the UW. Jennifer is such a positive person and it has been amazing to see her excel in teaching AND running her own baking business! Her products are crafted with so much detail and love.
What is your name and role at Peony Bakery?
My name is Jennifer. My main role is the owner and baker of Peony Bakery. I started back in mid-February as the main person running things.
What made you become interested in having a bakery business?
It just kind of happened - it wasn't intentional. The instagram was started mainly as a way for me to put photos of all of my baking creations that I'm doing, separately from my personal one.
Some friends started following it and wanted to buy some of the things I was making. It kind of snowballed to friends of friends being interested and strangers! By March, it became a full blown thing and [I thought] maybe it could be an actual bakery and applied for a business license. It became a side gig and has been a lot of fun.
I get to reconnect with some of my friends I know and remember from high school and college that I haven't seen in years. We start conversations and rekindle our friendships. I haven't seen this one friend in 5 or 6 years. It's been fun! Yes, we have a commercial kitchen in Seattle - we decided to move into one for bigger projects. [Baking] is therapeutic to do [for my] self care.
What is your favorite part of owning your business so far? What are the challenges?
Reconnecting with different people and getting to know new people. I got to meet the owners from Seattle Fish Guys, other business owners and getting connected with the community. At the same time, we are giving back. A lot of people have supported us so we have donated to the Harborview Medical Center and have different events here and there.
As of July 2020, Peony Bakery is currently selling Matcha Ice Cream Pins. 100% of the proceeds go towards The Conscious Kid’s Anti-Racist Children’s Books Education Fund.
Some challenges have been juggling teaching at the same time as baking. [My partner], Evan, has his full-time job as well. Late nights passed midnight, finishing orders, packing, and making sure that people are happy with what they're getting. We are figuring it out as we go since it wasn't supposed to be a bakery at the beginning. We are making things and figuring the business out along the way.
Tell us about your products!
The products are inspired by flavors I grew up with, my favorite things, and Seattle & the Pacific Northwest! We take suggestions from our customers and we love the interactions we have with them everyday!
What else would you like for people to know about you and/or your business?
Just in general, we are very different from other bakeries. It's a hobby and our own business that we started from the ground up. At the end of the day, I just think of Peony Bakery as a way to connect with our community and [gives us the opportunity] to meet people from Bellevue, Seattle, and as far as Tacoma.
We truly appreciate all the support. It was all so unexpected. My mom helps me occasionally bake and she is also in awe of what's happened, proud, and supportive of it. She is one of my main taste testers because she has a different taste pallet and gives me constructive criticism.
Thank you, Jennifer, for taking time to call and tell us all about your bakery business! We look forward to trying your products and hope our followers will also check out her work. If you try and want to share her products on social media, tag her bakery instagram @peonybakeryseattle. :)
